Application of Robust, Packaged Long-Period Fiber Grating for Strain Measurement
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper proposes an optical fiber strain sensor based on packaged long-period fiber gratings (PLPFG) which is fabricated by the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) process and packaged with poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer materials. The optical fiber sensor packaged with PDMS improves robustness effectively. The proposed PLPFG sensors have periods of 610, 650, 660 μm and fiber diameter of 48, 60, 72 μm, respectively. The resonance dip of the PLPFG grows when a strain loaded onto the sensor. The results show that the largest strain sensitivity of the PLPFG strain sensor was ́0.0652 dB/με from 0–1200 με and the linearity (R2) was 0.9812. Accordingly, the proposed PLPFG sensor has good potential for high-sensitivity strain sensing applications.

A general analysis of an inserted long-period grating in an air-clad photonic crystal fiber for temperature and strain measurement is presented. The temperature and strain can be detected simultaneously by using an artificial neural network. A simulation study was carried out with the data set generated by using theoretical strain and temperature sensitivities of the long-period gratings. It in...
متن کاملA Novel Long-Period Fiber Grating Optical Sensor for Large Strain Measurement
Critical buildings such as hospitals and police stations must remain functional immediately following a major earthquake event. Due to earthquake effects, they often experience large strains, leading to progressive collapses. Therefore, monitoring and assessing the large strain condition of critical buildings is of paramount importance to post-earthquake responses and evacuations in earthquake-...

We propose a Gaussian sampled fiber Bragg grating for multi-parameter sensing system. The sampled fiber Bragg grating combines the characteristics of fiber Bragg grating and long period grating. The transfer matrix method has been used to obtain the transmission spectrum of the grating. The shifts in narrowband loss peak and broadband loss peak in the transmission spectrum have been utilized to...
متن کاملFundamental limits in fiber Bragg grating peak wavelength measurements
We discuss the fundamental limits of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) wavelength metrology. High-accuracy wavelength measurements are critical for FBG strain sensors because a wavelength measurement uncertainty as small as 1 pm leads to an uncertainty of nearly 1 microstrain. We compare the measurement uncertainties for several common wavelengthmeasurement systems, including tunable laser, optical spe...
